Just Gimmie Some Truth

John Lennon is still dead.
It has been 30 years. Some things have changed, most things have not.
Instant Karma is still gonna get you. War is not over, even though everybody wants it to be. The Working Class Hero has been sold out and The People still don’t have The Power.
Imagine that.
You can re-package the music, re-brand the image, market it to the Gizmo Generation and sell it all back again.
But none of that matters.
The peace monuments will continue to go up, the lines will flow this December 8th around 72nd Street & Central Park West in Manhattan. Talking heads will ramble endlessly about the legend that is John Lennon.
But the simple fact remains, we still haven’t caught on to what John was all about.
Lennon said a lot during his shortened life. Sometimes foolish, other times profound. He was a Rock & Roll Genius whose music and life were inseparable.
He laid it all out there in a way that no songwriter had done before or since (sorry Kurt).
Shocking, contradictory, hilarious, brilliant.
He spoke the truth in simple terms.
God is a concept
By which we measure
Our pain
The Simple Truth.
About religion, about war, about people.
Revolutions 1 through 9.
This year Lennon would have been 70. Out there in the ether he is celebrating with his old Elvis 45s. He is either laughing or howling at the hoopla surrounding his “legacy.”
One thing is certain: He is still waiting for Some Truth.
“Gimmie Some Truth”
I’m sick and tired of hearing things
From uptight, short-sighted, narrow-minded hypocrites
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
I’ve had enough of reading things
By neurotic, psychotic, pig-headed politicians
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth
No short-haired, yellow-bellied, son of Tricky Dicky
Is gonna mother hubbard soft soap me
With just a pocketful of hope
Money for dope
Money for rope
I’m sick to death of seeing things
From tight-lipped, condescending, mama’s little chauvinists
All I want is the truth
Just gimme some truth now
I’ve had enough of watching scenes
Of schizophrenic, ego-centric, paranoiac, prima-donnas
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth
All I want is the truth now
Just gimme some truth now
Sleep well John Lennon.
The world is still waiting to come around.
Now dig some “Instant Karma,” written and recorded in a single day, then released 10 days later. It just so happens this instant single was released on February 6th, 1970, just one day before your humble Rock File scribe came into this world.
How’s that for Instant Karma?
