“To me, absurdity is the only reality.”
In this season of political shenanigans and intellectual apathy, once again we turn to Frank Zappa for guidance.
A true iconoclast in life and work, Zappa the musician was a non-conforming genius beyond classification. Dogma, his sworn enemy. Whatever the label/non-label, Zappa was a true American original, the Walt Whitman of modern electric music.
On what would have been Zappa’s 70th birthday, The Rock File celebrates the man in quotes:
“Most people wouldn’t know music if it came up and bit them on the ass.”
“Never discuss philosophy or politics in a disco environment.”
“The most important thing to do in your life is to not interfere with somebody else’s life.”
“The biggest threat to America today is not communism. It’s moving America toward a fascist theocracy … you have a government that prefers a certain moral code derived from a certain religion and that moral code turns into legislation to suit one certain religious point of view…”
“Let’s not be too rough on our own ignorance; it’s what makes America great!”
“Politics is the entertainment branch of industry.”
“Music is the only religion that delivers the goods.”
“Modern Americans behave as if intelligence were some sort of hideous deformity.”
“My best advice to anyone who wants to raise a happy, mentally healthy child is: Keep him or her as far away from a church as you can.”
And Zappa at work:
Happy Birthday Frank Zappa.
